Concentration Area: Basic Education

The Basic Education, as sub-area of Education, constitutes the Concentration Area of this Program, from which it is necessary to articulate two Research Lines focused on the training of teachers and Basic Education Management.

Basic Education is defined in art. 21 of the Law on the Guidelines and Bases of National Education as one of the levels of national education combining early childhood education, elementary education and high school, being compulsory from 4 to 17 years of age, including its free offer for all who had no access to it at their proper age.

The Law on the Guidelines and Bases of National Education (LDB) defines that the aims of Basic Education are "to develop the learner, to ensure the common formation indispensable for the exercise of citizenship and to provide them with the means to progress in the work and in later studies ".

It is understood here the Basic Education in the Brazilian historical context marked by the great concentration of incomes, by the inequalities and the denial to its population of access to basic rights such as quality health, basic sanitation and housing. In this context, basic education has its universalization as a challenge and, in public networks, many difficulties of access and permanence with quality, especially children, young people and adults of working origin. Due to its peculiarities, Basic Education has become a fertile and promising research line.

Research Line:

Basic Education Curriculum

Studies of the Basic Education Curriculum under different theoretical-methodological perspectives, focusing on the stages and modalities of the Brazilian Basic Education. Investigative inquiries about curriculum policies, the production and social distribution of knowledge, the organization of school knowledge and curricular tasks. Analysis of the relationship between curriculum and teaching; knowledge, learning and curriculum; curriculum and assessment. Study on the history of curriculum and school subjects, the relationship between curriculum and inclusion; curriculum and gender; curriculum and difference; curriculum and ethnic-racial issues; and curriculum and human rights.

Research Line:

Management and Organization of Pedagogical Work in the Basic School

Studies of the management and organization of the pedagogical work in the basic school. Analysis of the action of the instances of coordination and management of the public school, in its different stages and modalities. Research that takes on work as an organizing principle of basic education, educational actions aimed at specific audiences implemented in school environments, as well as studies on reflexes in the basic school of environmental management and environmental education initiatives.

The Curriculum and Management of the Basic School Graduate Program (PPEB) began its activities in June 2015 linked to the Institute of Educational Sciences (ICED / UFPA), when it had approved its Academic Master's course by the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and UFPA's Higher Council for Education, Research and Extension (CONSEPE), under the terms of Resolution No. 4,720 / 2015.

In 2017, with the creation of the Center of Transdisciplinary Studies in Basic Education (NEB) of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) under the terms of Resolution No. 765/2017-CONSUN, PPEB dissociated itself from ICED / UFPA, and becomes subunit of NEB. The Master's course belongs to the area of Education, has as Concentration Area the Basic Education and is formed by two Lines of Research: Curriculum of Basic Education and Management and Organization of Pedagogical Work in Basic School.

The program aims to train researchers at the Masters and, in the future, at the Doctorate level, aiming to:

  • Design itself as a reference in studies and research whose focus is based on social phenomena related to Basic Education, in the Amazon region in particular;
  • Articulate the training of researchers to strengthen Basic Education, particularly in the curriculum, management and pedagogical work that affect the Basic Education of the Amazon;
  • Qualify the training of professionals to act in the educational field, teaching, management and research at the level of Basic Education;
  • Promote academic and institutional exchange policies in the field of curriculum, management and teaching work in Basic Education, in order to solidify research, exchange investigative experiences and strategies for the production of knowledge, and improve the qualification of graduate students and professors linked to the partner Programs;
  • Strengthen scientific production by formulating Research Projects, consolidating Research Groups, conducting studies and promoting academic events based on the articulated performance of the Research Lines, whose results will be disseminated in the form of dissertations, theses, books, book chapters, articles in qualified journals, and papers presented in annals of events.

Currently, there are 22 permanent professors in the Program, with research projects linked to the Concentration Area of the course. The researches coordinated by the teaching staff are funded by development agencies such as CNPq, CAPES and UFPA.

In addition to the funds raised by the research projects, PPEB receives from CAPES, CNPq, Fapespa and shares of Masters scholarships to which students can apply. However, the request is subject to the availability of scholarships.

Profile of the researcher to be formed:

• The Researcher of Basic Education;

• The Professor of Higher Education - Researcher;

• The Professional of Basic Education - Researcher
